Thai Marriage Visa – Long-Term Stay for Foreign Spouses

It is not uncommon for foreign nationals who have developed a lasting relationship with a Thai partner to pursue a Thai Marriage Visa. This visa, officially categorized as a Non-Immigrant O Visa (based on marriage), allows the foreign spouse to reside in Thailand for an extended period. Initially granted for one year, this visa is renewable on an annual basis, provided the marriage remains legally valid and all required conditions are consistently met.

Eligibility Requirements for a Thai Marriage Visa

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria and provide the necessary documentation:

1. Marriage Documentation

• An official Thai marriage certificate (Kor Ror 2) and a certified copy (Kor Ror 3).
  
  

• If the marriage was conducted outside of Thailand, it must be duly registered with Thai authorities.
  
  

2. Financial Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate adequate financial means through one of the following options:

• A minimum balance of 400,000 THB maintained in a Thai bank account for at least two months prior to the visa application.
  
  

3. Supporting Documents

• A copy of the applicant’s passport, including the visa page and latest entry stamp.
  
  

• A copy of the Thai spouse’s ID card.
  
  

• A copy of the Thai spouse’s house registration (Tabien Baan).
  
  

• Proof of residence in Thailand, such as a lease agreement, utility bill, or other official documentation confirming the applicant’s current address.
  
  

4. Photographic Evidence

• Photos of the couple living together in Thailand.
  
  

• Optional: A photo with the Thai spouse’s family may also be requested by immigration officers.
  
  

Application Process

Step 1: Apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa

• If applying from outside Thailand, submit your application to a Thai embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  
  

• If you are already in Thailand on a different visa type, you may apply for a visa conversion at the local Immigration Office.
  
  

Step 2: Apply for a One-Year Extension

• Once holding a Non-Immigrant O Visa, you may apply for a one-year extension of stay on the basis of marriage at your local Thai Immigration Office.
  
  

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

• Fees vary slightly by location. We will confirm the current fee at your local immigration office upon application.

Visa Renewal

The Marriage Visa is valid for one year and may be renewed annually, provided that all conditions—including the validity of the marriage and financial requirements—are maintained.

Re-entry Permit

If you intend to travel outside of Thailand during the validity period of your Marriage Visa, you must obtain a re-entry permit to preserve your visa status. Failure to do so will result in the visa being void upon departure.

90-Day Reporting

Holders of the Thai Marriage Visa are required to report their current address to the Thai Immigration Office every 90 days, in accordance with Thai immigration regulations.

Additional Considerations

• Work Authorization: Possession of a Marriage Visa does not automatically permit employment in Thailand. A valid work permit is required if you wish to work legally within the country.
